Stuart Pearce has wished Shaun Wright-Phillips every success for his future career, but he is already looking forward to strengthening his squad.

The manager is in Bangkok with the players as they prepare for the pre-season tournament that will also involve Everton, Bolton Wanderers and the Thai national side.

Wright-Phillips’ departure was sealed after Pearce and the team had left for Thailand, but the boss revealed that he has spoken to Shaun, being keen to stress that the parting of the ways was amicable.

“Shaun is an exceptional young man and an exceptional talent, and I called him on Monday to wish him every success. He’s welcome to call me for any reason.”

Pearce is realistic in his acceptance that the funds generated by the sale of Wright-Phillips will go a long way towards his goal of improving the overall strength of the squad.

“He could have gone on to become an established England international with us but his going, I believe, will make the squad stronger ultimately.

“I can bring in two or three new players who will strengthen us in a number of areas.”

The manager and the squad have finished their first full day in the Thai capital with a trip to a kickboxing tournament at the Lumpinee Stadium.
