Paul Dickov’s return to Manchester City’s colours has earned a warm tribute from manager and former teammate Stuart Pearce.

The Scottish striker is back in sky blue for the first time since the 2001/02 season and was typically industrious during Wednesday night’s 0-0 with Portsmouth.

He was partnered with Darius Vassell and the boss applauded their efforts.

“We asked them to do certain jobs that may not be apparent to people outside the dressing room. They did them from the first minute to the last, and when people do that for me I can’t help but pleased with them.”

Dickov won an ovation when he robbed Sol Campbell as the former Arsenal defender tried to shepherd the ball out of play in the first half, and Pearce echoed the fans’ sentiments.

“That’s the best I’ve seen Paul Dickov play in a Manchester City shirt since he’s been back at the club. He’s cranked up his performances from pre-season and he’s the Paul Dickov that’s a handful to all teams and a thorn in the side.”
