Stuart Pearce has outlined his early aims for the Blues squad as they returned to training at Carrington today.

The Blues boss observed: “I think this first week we will assess the fitness of the players and we’ll be doing fitness tests on them and get them feeling the ball really, something they’ve probably not done for the majority of the summer.

“The boys are looking in good shape having followed the programme we gave them over the summer and it’s just a case of getting them back into the swing of things.

“The overall aim is to get them back as a fully fit squad ahead of that first game at Chelsea and obviously selection problems for me - so that’s what we’re looking for.”

City’s pre-season gets underway on July 19 with an evening visit to Wrexham and the Manager added: “We’re back into training now and with a game 10 days away we’ll be ready for that and it’s just a case of giving everyone 45 minutes football to start with and building up progressively.

“It is important to make sure that the new signings who have joined us in the summer are comfortable and the Academy graduates quickly get acclimatised to Carrington.”

Pearce also had time to give a quick answer on the current transfer speculation surrounding the Club.

He confirmed: “We’re just waiting on one player at the moment and an agreement with the clubs should be in place this week and obviously we’re battling away for one or two others.”
