The talented midfielder has been prominent in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s plans ever since the new manager took over in early July, and he has flourished with the challenge posed by the arrival of the likes of Geovanni, Elano and Martin Petrov.
He played a big part in Saturday’s win at Upton Park, and of the way City have responded to the new manager and the new arrivals Stephen says:
“We can score goals from anywhere, and it’s really exciting for me to play in a team like this. We’re a passing team, and the more we play together the better but we still haven’t played together that much yet. It’s just great to get this win under our belts and we can be positive going into Wednesday’s game against Derby.
“In the Valencia game I played in the hole, but at West Ham Elano was in the hole and I was on the right, but I’m just happy once I’m playing.”
According to the 20-year-old, the summer’s transfer activity has resulted in more of an edge at training.
“Every day in training’s a battle, but not taking your place for granted is a good way to be. You’re working hard every day, you’re up against big names and players that have been brought in, but it’s good trying your best and trying to impress.”
With the great start to the season under City’s belt, Stephen is already focussing on keeping up the good work when Derby County visit on Wednesday night.
“Derby are going to be looking to get as many points as possible already, having just come up from the Championship, but every game’s a battle and every one is different. I just hope we can be strong and take three points off them as well. I’m going to rest up a little bit now, but I can’t wait for Wednesday.”
