City goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson is set to miss the first month of the Premier League season after sustaining a hairline fracture of the thumb.

The Swedish international was forced to miss Saturday’s Thomas Cook Trophy match against Valencia, and City were dealt a further blow with second choice Joe Hart also absent through injury. Kasper Schmeichel stepped up to play the full 90 minutes, with Filip Mentel sitting on the bench.

City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has confirmed that he will be looking to bring a goalkeeper, plus other players, into his squad this week, saying:

“Unfortunately we had two goalkeepers get injured within two days, Joe Hart should be back training on Tuesday or Wednesday, a maximum of a week. Isaksson is worse though, the medical staff say he will be away for four weeks.

“It’s not the best way to start the Premier League, and starting with two very young goalkeepers. We will look at it on Monday, unfortunately it’s more or less a must that we bring another keeper in.”
