Sven-Goran Eriksson has been discussing three City players who have been in the spotlight for varying reasons this week.

Brazilian midfielder Geovanni signed for the Club on Tuesday and will link up with the rest of the squad after they return from the week-long visit to Sweden, but the Manager is looking to draw on the player’s experience straight away.

Sven says: “He’s played for Barcelona and Benfica, he’s an extremely big talent and he has been for many years. He’s 27 but we hope he can develop his talent further, and that we can see some of his tricks and his goals. We hope he’ll be a good player for us, but he’s one for now.”

Although earmarked as long-term investment, Swiss Under 21 captain Gelson Fernandes has impressed Eriksson so much since starting training with the squad in Sweden that he thinks he might make a more immediate impact.

“I’m very pleased with the way he has presented himself since arriving here,” the Manager continues, “and he’s one for the future but I think he could be one for now as well. He’ll be very useful for us this season because he’s obviously a good football player.”

City received and rejected a bid from Turkish club Besiktas for Darius Vassell this week, about which Sven adds:

“We don’t want to sell him, when we have a final squad in place we will decide who stays and who moves on.”
