With both Stephen Ireland and Michael Johnson hitting the headlines for the Blues this season, Sven-Goran Eriksson has spoken out about his young charges.

After Wednesday night’s news that Stephen Ireland had put pen to paper on a five-year deal, a pleased Eriksson revealed: “I’m very happy he’s signed.

“He’s a very, very good footballer and one coming from the Academy, so that’s one more we have the long-term. That’s good for the Club and good for us.

“I think that he will play a very good football match for us on Saturday, he’s training very well.”

And after a second match-winning goal of the season, 19-year-old Johnson has impressed his Manager greatly thus far.

He told us: “He’s a very good all-round football player as I said after the game on Sunday.

“He can do everything on a football pitch. And of course he’s young and will get better and better. It’s great for the Club to have young players like that.

“He wants to play football, he loves to play football and he trains very hard every day at Carrington. We need that from him, and the goals he’s scored so far for us this season have been very, very important.”
