The German midfielder, who has rolled back the years with some classy performances so far this season, has recalled how his father’s coaching set him on the path that led to a hugely successful career that has included a World Cup runner’s up medal and Champions League glory with Liverpool.
“I was lucky that my dad coached me for five or six years,” says Didi, “but it wasn’t easy because he always had a go at me, even if we won! He knew that I had potential, and he wanted me to make sure that I took the chance to realise I could make a living out of football.
“He coached me for five or six years, and these were the years when I probably learned the most about the game.”
But with Didi having two daughters, is the Hamann footballing dynasty about to come to an end?
“It looks like it! My brother’s got three kids, and they are all girls as well, so it’s a bit of a worry!” he laughs.
