A great start to the season from Micah Richards has been capped with the young defender receiving the Barclays Premier League Player of the Month award for August.

The 19-year-old has risen to the challenge of playing at centre-half full time since the arrival of Sven-Goran Eriksson, and the Blues boss is also celebrating after being named as August’s Manager of the Month.

City won their first three games without conceding a goal, and Richards was outstanding in the memorable derby win over Manchester United. He also set up Frank Lampard’s goal for England in last month’s friendly against Germany, and has been lavished with praise for his displays on national duty again this week.

A delighted Micah told mcfctv.com, “It’s really nice to win this award, I thought I had played well this month but it’s been a great team effort here at City as well. I did well when I went away with England, but this is very special for me. Whether I play at right back or centre half does not really matter to me, I’ll always give 100% for the team.”

Sven-Goran Eriksson has also been generous in his praise for Micah, saying, “I think he deserves his award more than mine, because he has been absolutely fantastic. I don’t think anyone could argue with his award over the way he has played for us, 19 years old and playing so well for both City and England has been a great effort by him.”
