City's Brazilian playmaker Elano has been hailed by Sven-Goran Eriksson as the kind of player who is difficult to find but a huge bonus to have on your side.

The 26-year-old, a summer capture from Shakhtar Donetsk, enjoyed possibly his best game for the Blues in Sunday’s 1-0 win Aston Villa as he linked up with Michael Johnson to lay on the teenager’s second goal of the season.

The pair had combined in similar circumstances in the first home game of the season against Derby County, and Sven says of Elano: “He’s doing very well. When he has the ball, something will happen more or less all the time. I shouldn’t speak too much about him because it’s better for the opponents to know as little as possible about him.

“Elano is one of those players who thinks ‘the ball in mine, I can control it’ and with him you know anything is possible.

“He might not create a chance or a good pass every time he gets the ball, but you have the feeling he can create.”

The Brazilian international has started every league match since his arrival at City just before the season started, and his Villa performance showed no ill-effects from his having to fly back from the United States after two games for his country.

Speaking on MCFCTV.com, Sven continued, “It’s important to know that when he came here, he was not physically 100%, maybe he’s not 100% yet because when there is the long breaks he’s travelling with Brazil. He will get better and better.

“A player like him is very difficult to find.”
