Joe Hart established himself as City’s first-choice stopper last season, but 2007/08 began with Kasper Schmeichel impressing before he, Hart and the now departed Andreas Isaksson battled for the number one jersey.
Isaksson’s summer transfer to PSV Eindhoven leaves a potential vacancy, as the Manager admits.
“There is an opportunity there,” says Hughes. “We have lost an experienced goalkeeper, and if we can get the right quality in we are looking to add experience.
“That’s important, not only for the development of the very good young keepers we have at the club, but also because we should have the cover of an experienced keeper.”
Injuries to Hart and Isaksson saw Schmeichel grab his chance at the start of last season, and Hughes is well aware of the need for strength in depth should just one keeper be forced to drop out.
“All Premier League clubs carry three keepers of the required standard, and that’s what we are looking to do. It’s a case of seeing what’s out there and if we can get the right person on board.
“We have two exceptionally talented young keepers at the club, we’re very conscious of that, but I think we do need the comfort of making sure that we have three quality keepers here.”
