The Swiss midfielder could have no complaints about his own efforts in a display that showed he has fully adapted to the Premier League following his arrival from FC Sion last summer.
Gelson says, “It was a proper English football match, but I’m not happy because we didn’t win. We’ve got to keep working and keep believing.”
Steve Bruce’s side were happy defend in numbers and try to hot City on the break, a tactic that Gelson admits the Blues must start to combat in the next few weeks against teams in a similar position to Wigan.
“It’s very difficult to play against if you can’t find a solution. If you score first it becomes a lot easier, but they defended well and they know we like to play, we like to keep the ball so they just waited and defended deep. We just have to keep working against teams like this to find an answer.
“The longer you go on without scoring, the more frustrating it gets. Wigan were dangerous on the counter-attack but we were frustrated. We tried hard, I think we played quite well but we are disappointed because we only came away with one point.”
Gelson formed a youthful midfield partnership with the returning Michael Johnson, and of his younger team mate he says,
“We like playing together, we’ve got a good relationship but there’s a good spirit in the whole squad. I enjoy playing alongside Michael, but I enjoy playing with all my team mates as well.”
City ended the game with three recent additions to the squad, Castillo, Caicedo and Benjani, all on the pitch. Speaking like a veteran, Gelson knows there has to be a balance between the need for them to find their feet and the need for results.
“They need time to adapt to the way the game is played in England and we need time to play with them, but we need to do that in the next few weeks because we need to start playing better and getting better results,” he concludes.
