The City boss declared earlier this week that bringing SWP back from his three-year exile at Chelsea in the summer ranked alongside the best transfers he had ever pulled off as a manager.
Now as the Blues get sight of the trophy that Shaun believes can usher in a new era at the revitalised club, the bubbly England midfielder has confessed that he would be delighted to commit himself forever to City.
Wright-Phillips, geting ready to face his dad Ian’s old team Arsenal tomorrow at The Emirates, said: “I can’t see myself going anywhere else. I see myself staying for a long time, but it’s the club that says Yes or No. If the opportunity came to stay for life, I would quite honestly say I would. I am very happy here.”
SWP has rejuvenated his career since returning from Stamford Bridge and is clearly on Fabio Capello’s radar for England, having played a cameo role off the bench in the 2-1 win over Ukraine despite a nagging ankle problem.
He admitted: “I would love to go to South Africa but that is a long way off - at the moment I just want to get to the UEFA Cup final. Once everyone gets a taste of one trophy, it could set off an effect. People will get the hunger and want more.
“It’s unlimited how far the club could go with the people who are around and in charge, including the boss. We could go a long way for a long time. I do think we will be able to challenge for the League, but everyone has to be patient.”
Blues go to Hamburg next Thursday for the first leg of the UEFA Cup quarter-final with the sold-out second leg at the City of Manchester Stadium a week later. SWP has his eyes fixed on glory in Istanbul on May 20th.
He said: “To win it would be a step in the right direction, especially with all the games we have been through. We have made it hard for ourselves but when our backs have been against the wall we still seem to come out on top.”
