Shay Given is not scared of telling his more mercurial team mates to cut out the fancy stuff in the closing minutes of games

The Blues’ brilliant keeper was again at the top of his game producing a third clean sheet in a week as City extended their 100 per cent record this season.

But he admits he wished the crowd pleasing attacking talents in the side would sometimes head for the corner flag and not the opposition goal.

“What we have to learn as a team that you don’t have to score every time you have the ball,” he grinned.

“I was screaming at the end of the Wolves match to stick it in the corner but we have some great players going forward and they like to entertain and attack!

“Even so with a couple of minutes to go you have to have your professional head on and it was too open towards the end for my liking. We didn’t need a second goal we just needed to keep the ball.

“We are still are still gelling as a team and a unit and it will take time but you cannot do better than two wins from two games. You cannot complain and I am not doing.”

Given admits he loves watching the slick passing and constant movement ahead of him but has to remind himself not to get carried away with the admiration.

“When we have teams penned in like that for the back four and the goalkeeper it is about concentration levels,” he said

“That was the case against Wolves. I didn’t have much to do but when I did I had to be in tune. It is all about not getting carried away with the exciting football that we do play and make sure the back door is shut.

“We have momentum on our side and it was important that we followed up the win at Blackburn with another here so we have to be pleased.

“We are not getting carried away; it is only two games it is a great start that is all it is. But we have had two Premier League clean sheets which is important for me and the defensive unit. We are happy with the start.

“We get the sense that we are a scalp for sides and it will be the same at Palace in midweek in the Carling Cup and at Portsmouth next weekend.

“We can sense the anticipation amongst our fans and rightly so because expectation levels have gone up. They were great and you could sense the excitement.”
