Mark Hughes has hailed City's battling qualities after a draining week that ended with smiles all around at the club.

Memories of the disappointing draw with Hull were banished, first by the 3-0 win over Arsenal in the Carling Cup and then the superb 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Saturday evening.

The Manager is convinced that the experience and character of his battle-hardened squad played a huge part in these performances and results, epitomised by Emmanuel Adebayor bouncing back from his own goal to put City back on level terms against Chelsea.

We had to pick ourselves up again and put in another high-quality performance after the high of Wednesday. That’s the sign of a good team.

Hughes says, “We targeted players that we felt had the right approach and mentality to go along with their undoubted ability.

“Games and performances like we have seen in the last week have re-emphasised what I already knew about them. It was a difficult week, we had to pick ourselves up again and put in another high-quality performance after the high of Wednesday. That’s the sign of a good team.”

Another summer signing, Carlos Tevez, bagged a great goal in each game and the Manager is delighted that after a heel injury hampered him before the season started, the Argentinean is now hitting his stride.

“Carlos is showing everybody why we brought him to the club. Initially, he wasn’t fit enough. He missed all of the pre-season and that had an impact on what he could produce.

“But in recent weeks, people have seen what he can do for the team. He has that energy, that trigger he gives the midfield and the back four because of his energy in closing people down is going to be really important for us.”
