Shay Given has been voted the Etihad Airways Player of the Month for November following a string of impressive displays for the Blues.

Given has become a huge crowd favourite since joining City from Newcastle United last January and collects the award after polling 38% of the supporters’ votes.

Given played six games for City and Ireland last month and had to shrug off the personal disappointment of missing out on next summer’s World Cup following France’s hugely controversial play off victory in Paris.

Arguably, his superb display away to Birmingham City at the start of November was reason enough to win the award. During that match, Given saved a penalty and made at least one stop from Christian Benitez that is already a contender for save of the season – though rarely a game passes without the Irishman making at least one breathtaking stop.

City fan Gary Wheeler from Bolton will present Shay with a bottle of champagne at Carrington next week after being randomly selected from everyone who nominated the Blues’ No.1 as their choice for November.

October’s winner Martin Petrov was runner-up with a healthy 26% of all votes polled for November and Nigel de Jong finished third with 16%.

Sean Tse has been voted the Academy player of the month. Under-18s coach Scott Sellers said: “Sean made an excellent comeback from a cruciate ligament injury with two strong performances against Bolton and Preston, and fully deserves this award for his attitude to his rehabilitation and his performance in November.”

Elsewhere, James Poole is Glyn Hodges’ choice Reserve Player of the Month.

Shay is a super goalkeeper! The very best for a long time and the most consistent.
