Shaun Wright-Phillips believes that the Blues go into tonight’s Carling Cup quarter final tie with Arsenal as favourites and insists that is just the way he likes it.

The England winger feels City’s prohibitive odds at the bookmakers for tonight’s match are as much to do with the win over the Gunners earlier in the season as the likelihood that Arsene Wenger will put out a side packed with youth.

Wright-Phillips, who spent Monday afternoon at a signing session at the City store in the Arndale Centre, is planning on sending the fans home equally as happy this evening.

“The game will be a huge for the club and especially for the supporters,” he declared. “It is vital to get through this tie tonight.

“We know how much the fans want us to progress and how much they crave success and that is what we want too.  Our fans have been on one of football’s biggest roller coaster rides for years and years and they deserve to see the team win something.

It will be nice to give the supporters something back for the backing they give us and they will play their part in the contest.

SWP scored the fourth goal in the 4-2 defeat of the Gunners back in September on a day when a new record was set for a crowd at CoMs.

He has also bagged two goals in the last two homes games as he closes in on a half century for the club. Confidence is not an issue

“I feel as though we are favourites,” he stressed. “Arsenal have come to our place the last two years and left with nothing and we hope it is the same tonight.

“Whatever they say and however confident they sound they will be just as worried about us as we are about them.”
