Wayne Bridge, Nigel de Jong and Vladimir Weiss dropped in at Durban’s St Augustin’s Medical Centre to publicise the “Goals For Miracles” campaign. Any goal scored in tonight’s Vodacom Challenge game between City and Kaizer Chiefs will add 150,000 SA Rand to the initiative, which helps pay for cataract operations for South Africans who otherwise would not be able to afford the operation.
It costs 13,000 Rand for the procedure, which can restore sight almost overnight, and in addition to the money raised by the game in Durban, other Vodacom-sponsored teams in South Africa will continue to help the campaign in their coming season.
The Blues trio met several people who have had the operation, as well as posing for photos and chatting with hospital staff, and afterwards Nigel told us how impressed he was with the initiative.
“This is a good project, football can open a lot of doors and I have seen that here today. Speaking to the ladies here who had their sight back within a week or even a day, it tells you what great things can happen in the medical world today. We’re all blessed with our own good health, and if we can give a little bit back by raising money, why not?”
