The Blues are in with a great shout of qualifying for the inaugural Europa League in 2009/10 via the UEFA Cup, but it looks increasingly like seventh place in the Barclays Premier League would be good enough to earn a place in the new European competition.
City’s sixth straight home win in the league, courtesy of a rare goal for Richards, put them three points behind Wigan, the current occupants of seventh place, and Micah sees the race for that place hotting up as the campaign draws to a close.
“The season has been a bit typical of City, a bit up and down but we have momentum now. That’s six wins on the trot at home now. We’ve been getting a little bit of stick this season but as long as our home form continues like this then we’ll be alright. Europe was always our aim and we can really push on for that again for next season.
“With our team we should never be in a relegation battle, we have to look at the top end. We’ve been up and down this season but we’ll put it right.”
Sunday’s win was the third straight shut-out for City’s defence at home in the league, with Nedum Onuoha once again playing a big part in keeping the visitors out and earning a tribute from his team mate.
“Nedum’s so fast and strong, and he’s got a good run of games behind him now after being troubled by all the injuries he had over the last few years. He’s been in great form lately and I’m really glad to see him doing well again.”
Micah’s goal was just the third of his club career, and they usually count - the previous two, in 2006, were both dramatic last-minute equalisers. Sunday’s header was relatively sedate, but despite Robinho getting a touch as it crossed the line, Micah is making sure he gets the credit.
“I didn’t see it straight after the game, but I’m taking it!” he smiles. “It’s always nice to get a goal, I think I have had a few cleared off the line over the last couple of years so I’m glad to have had one go down in my name.”
