City’s confidence could not be any higher going into Sunday’s derby according to Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Four straight wins in the Barclays Premier League, plus another in the Carling Cup, have given Blues fans the perfect tonic ahead of the visit to Old Trafford to face a United side ahead of City in the table on goal difference.

Shaun has featured in every minute of all five City games so far this season, so no-one has a better grasp on how good the squad is feeling in the run-up to the game that comes hot on the heels of City’s superb 4-2 win over Arsenal last Saturday.

Shaun said: “We’ve put a winning run together since the Celtic pre-season game and managed to keep it going. We have not conceded many goals, which is fantastic coming off the back of last year. All we can do is build on it, and get better and better.

“The confidence has been high ever since we came back for training, when we could really see what was happening here. Everybody was confident about the season, and now everybody has the belief which is a big step forward for us.”

This place really is like a family now, everybody wants everybody else to do well whether selected or not.

While Shaun has been a mainstay of the starting line-up since day one, others have had to watch from the sidelines and wait for their chance to come. Last Saturday’s win was notable for the first significant contributions of the season from Nigel de Jong and Martin Petrov, and Shaun has paid a generous tribute to those in the squad who are itching to get a regular slot in the side.

“The players not involved much so far have been fantastic,” he continued.  “Martin, Nigel, Nedum and even Vladimir have given us great support off the pitch, it really has been second-to-none. They have all congratulated us when we do well, and when they have had their chance they have performed excellently.
