Two wins after the defeat to Everton had City briefly at the top of the table on Bank Holiday Tuesday and the England defender is adamant there is still more to come.
The togetherness that so many critics have pointed to as being absent this term has been evident in abundance and in addition resounding wins over Villa and West Ham recently have demonstrated an ability to win ‘sans Tevez’ something else with which the Blues were supposed to struggle.
“We have been out of the blocks quickly in the last two games,” declared Lescott. “We were pretty dire in the opening minutes against Everton and it is something we have consciously put right.
“When we get our noses in front we are a hard side to stop. We showed that against Newcastle and Villa. We are always confident that we can hold it.
“What this holiday period has shown, too, is that we have the strength in depth to maintain a challenge up at the top.
“It was nice to be number one for a few hours – I hadn’t been top before – but it was more important that we showed we can make changes, bring people in and not weaken the team.
“That manager made five changes from Newcastle to Villa and yet the performance was good. There is a real high standard of players right through the whole squad. That gives everyone confidence.
“We are not getting carried away or making any predictions. Our aim is to be consistent and keep the pressure on the sides around us.”
Lescott, a frequent scorer in his days at Everton, opened his goal account for the season with a first half header - the first headed goal of the season for the Blues.
“It was a great ball in,” he smiled. “We knew we hadn’t scored with a header before this season and it was something we had to put right. Wrighty was the last one to score with his head!
“It was a great delivery and I was just glad I got on the end of it. Hopefully that will open the floodgates.”
