The Blues were top of the Barclays Premier League, albeit briefly, earlier this week and they can also look forward to attempts on both the FA Cup and the Europa League in the coming weeks.
Rather than see the cups as a distraction from an assault on the summit of the Barclays Premier League, Nigel insists that success in any form will be good for City.
“You have to understand that we are in two other competitions as well - the Europa League and the FA Cup,” says the Dutch midfielder.
It’s not just that we are going for the Premier League. It’s about getting the winning mentality and making guys hungry.
“If you win a cup, it doesn’t matter which one it is, it makes guys hungry and they then want even more success. That’s what we are trying to do. Win some silverware and go step by step.
“It was only for a couple of hours because United hadn’t played at Birmingham, but we went top of the league and, for us, it’s just important that we keep the momentum going.”
Saturday’s visitors have an excellent away record, with five victories on the road this season, but Nigel and his team mates will be aiming to carry on with the form that saw them streak away from Aston Villa.
“It was really important for us to beat Aston Villa 4-0. It can set the tone and it will only give us confidence for the next game. We need points away, but we need to pick them up at home, especially.
“We now have Blackpool at home on Saturday, so we have to keep the momentum going by winning that one too. It’s all about seeing what each game brings us.”
