The former Arsenal and Inter Milan midfielder, a World Cup and European Championship winner on the way to 107 caps, was not even included in the most recent squad by France coach Raymond Domanech.
But Vieira, who made his full League debut last week against Bolton, has been assured that a regular role in a successful City run-in will see him lead Les Bleus in South Africa.
Vieira, signed from Inter last month, said: “I know I made the right move - I strongly believe in the quality of the football club and the quality of the players here.
“I had a few choices but I wanted to make the right one - and I am 100 per cent sure I did. Returning to the national team will come if I do well with Manchester City.
“My target is the World Cup. But to go to the World Cup, I have to perform with City. I have to play well, and play as many games as I can to have a chance.
“But I am really focused on the way I perform at City. After a month I am more than confident we can do it - the hunger to finish in the top four is there. We know what we have to do.”
Vieira, 33, has just recovered from a calf injury. Domenech said at the weekend: “If he gets a run of matches, Patrick is the captain of the France team. He has just started playing again.
“What matters, and Pat knows it, is that he gets a run of matches. I definitely don’t have any doubts about his qualities. There’s not even a debate.”
