Vincent Kompany has thanked City’s fans for responding to his call to make the City of Manchester Stadium a ‘blue hell’ in the Carling Cup derby semi final.

The Belgian played a stellar role in the stirring 2-1 win, including the assist for Carlos Tevez’ second goal, a close-range header after Vincent had fetched the ball back from near the post.

Reflecting on the win, Vincent said: “We got the result we wanted, and before the game I had called for some extra support from the fans for tonight and they were terrific. Even when we have gone behind against the best teams, at home they have really made a difference.

After we went behind we did not let them have too many chances apart from the last 10 minutes or so. We were solid and looking at the second leg that’s going to be important.

...Vincent Kompany...

Vincent had headed a good chance wide not long before setting up what turned out to be the winning goal, but he was delighted to play his part in helping the man who grabbed all the headlines with another storming performance.

“I’m not too bad with my feet!” he laughed. “It was good to set up a goal, but if it was anyone I’m very glad that it was Carlos who scored it. It gives us the opportunity for the second leg to go to Old Trafford with a good result behind us. I don’t think we are the kind of team to give away a lot so it’s going to be interesting!

“Carlos’ footballing quality is there for everyone to see but his mentality on the pitch is amazing, as good as you could wish for from a team mate. That makes more of a difference than him being a terrific player, it’s the fact that he belongs to that family and he feels he’s part of it. We’re all happy for him that he is doing so well.”

Satisfied with a good night’s work, Vincent is adamant that the Blues are in the driving seat for what is sure to be a titanic tussle next Wednesday night.

He adds, “If you’re not going to be confident after a result like this, when are you going to be? It’s the perfect situation, I believe we can score again as well and that’s a big difference for us.”
