Adam Johnson breezed into pre-season training at Carrington today and the buoyant Blues winger admitted that he could hardly wait to get back.

Johnno, who narrowly missed out on England’s World Cup campaign in South Africa, revelled in the first-day sunshine as the City squad ran off the summer ring rust.

He said: “I’ve been looking forward to coming back - I didn’t really want the season to end because it was going so well and I was in good form.

“But it’s a new season, we’re in Europe, and everybody’s excited about what’s going to happen. It just seems to get more exciting by the day with the new signings.

“It’s a great place to play. That’s where the club are going, we want to win things and progress. It’s going to be great to see who else comes in the next couple of weeks.”

Adam is raring to go now, saying: “I had a really good summer. I was obviously disappointed not to go to the World Cup but I was pleased with how the season had gone.

“I got my head down, got some rest, and went on holiday to Los Angeles and Las Vegas. I’m not much of a gambler, but I had a few drinks to celebrate the season!”

His smile widens at the prospect of World Cup trio Jerome Boateng of Germany, Yaya Toure of Ivory Coast and David Silva of Spain boosting the Blues challenge this season.

Johnson said: “There’s a big squad here now but there’s also a lot of games, and everybody can’t play in every game - there’s Europe as well as the two cups.

“We need a good squad with strong people on the bench. There will obviously be changes for different games and I’m ready for that. It’s going to be exciting times. I can’t wait.”
