David Platt has warned City's under-scrutiny players that they must get used to life "in a goldfish bowl" as Roberto Mancini's big-name squad pursue success for the club.

Former England midfielder Platt, who spent years in football’s highest reaches with Arsenal and several Serie A sides, says the stars have to learn to take the relentless day-to-day coverage of City in their stride.

The Blues coach said: “We have catapulted ourselves into a goldfish bowl. All of a sudden we are at the forefront of things. We have put ourselves into the position of challenging for a place in the Champions League, and to win trophies.

“The spotlight is on us, and if we lose matches, there is going to be negativity coming from outside. The good thing is that we know internally what is going on. There have been false or exaggerated reports.

“I’ve known Roberto Mancini for 20 years, and he puts pressure on himself to succeed - that’s why we have good players at the club that want to win, that want to succeed.

Defeats kick them, but they get back on it in the morning, and that’s what we do

“The negativity comes from outside the club. You come to the training ground every day and there is no negativity there.

“The players don’t like losing games, we (the staff) don’t like losing games. We’ve got the opportunity in the next three games to get back on it.

“We’ve got very experienced players, they’ve won, they’ve lost, they’ve drawn. If you ask the players, and the management, we are very confident that we can pick ourselves up from this.

“We are sat fourth in the Premier League, three points behind Manchester United and Arsenal, and in the Europa League we are in a very good position where if we win our game against Salzburg we’re close to qualifying.”
