Ben Mee is hoping for the perfect 21st birthday present at West Brom this evening.

The lifelong City fan is in the squad for the Blues’ Carling Cup trip to The Hawthorns and could make his first senior appearance for the club he’s supported and played for since he was a small boy.

Mee has been in impressive form at EDS level and has patiently watched as several other Academy graduates progressed into the senior side while he has had to bide his time.

Now the young central defender – who turned 21 yesterday - is champing at the bit to show Roberto Mancini what he can do after being included in the party to travel to the Midlands.

“During training we did some work on our shape at the back for the West Brom and I was part of that so I’m keeping my fingers crossed,” said Mee.

“Everyone tries to second-guess the squad, but we won’t know until later today. It’s great to be in the party to travel to West Brom and I’m sure there will be a good mix of young and experienced players so I just hope I get my chance.

I’ve been waiting for this moment and I’m ready for it. It’s up to the manager now, but if I do play I’ll give it my all because I need to take any opportunities that come my way

Mee knows West Brom will be a tough place to go and will be looking to make life tough for City - whoever plays.

“They beat Birmingham on Saturday which was a great result but I don’t know how they’ll view the Carling Cup,” he said. “They will have prioritised Premier League survival so we’ll have to wait and see what line-up they put out.

“They’ve got a decent squad and my gut-feeling is they’ll want to keep their home form going and put out a strong team.  I’m really looking forward to tonight and there are a lot of young players in the squad so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

“I’ve got my family tickets just in case so if I do get on, they’ll all be there to see it. My brother is back from serving in the Army for my birthday and he’ll be there, too. I’m just happy to be involved and have had a great week so far – let’s hope it continues!”
