An opening day point at Spurs was followed by the dismantling of a strong Liverpool team and Kolo reckons if one or two of the numerous chances created against Sunderland and Blackburn had been converted, things would be much rosier.
“We know we’ve not made the kind of start we would have liked in the Premier League,” he said. “But we’ve only lost one of the seven league and cup games we’ve played and conceded just two goals in that time, so it’s not that bad and we will improve as we go along.”
Kolo has quickly put the mix-up between himself and Joe Hart out of his mind and accepted it as no more than a bizarre moment that is now confined to the past.
“Not winning the game hurt more,” he said. “We need to make sure we have the cushion of a lead when we dominate teams because, just as with Sunderland and, of course, against Blackburn, if you make one mistake, it can turn a win into a draw or a draw into a defeat and it costs you further down the line.
As for the Blackburn goal, it was obviously very disappointing, but sometimes these things happen in football – confidence-wise, for me, it is not a problem as I think I proved in our midweek win over Salzburg.
Kolo is now urging his team-mates to go to a ground where the Blues have never won – the DW Stadium - and leave with nothing less than a victory.
With six winless visits to the Latics’ home since they switched venues in 2002, the Ivory Coast star says this weekend would be perfect time to end the jinx.
“What we need to do is go to Wigan Athletic on Sunday, forget about past results, pick up three points and move on from there,” he said.
“We have a lot of games coming up in a short space of time so we can quickly climb the table and hopefully make good progress in the cup competitions, too. I’m confident we’ll do exactly that.”
