Kolarov & Co raced into a 4-1 lead only to leave manager Roberto Mancini fuming over late defensive errors that handed the visitors the chance of leaving the City of Manchester Stadium with a point.
Left-back Kolarov admitted: “Maybe when you get to 4-1 you think you have finished the game with a good score - that’s a danger, that you take your foot off the gas. But it’s never, never over in the Premier League until the 90 minutes has gone and you have to stay focused.
“Wolves opened very well at one-zero, then we started to play like we know we can, and it was 4-1! But we made a couple of mistakes, and you just can’t do that at this level. We can’t be making mistakes like that.
“It was very important that we got the three points to take us to the top of the table. It’s not important what the other teams are doing - we must try to win every game and then we’ll look at how the others have done.”
City scored four goals for the third time this campaign despite the absence of Mario Balotelli and David Silva, with new signing Edin Dzeko showing plenty of promise in spite of his Bundesliga winter lay-off.
Kolarov said: “Edin is a great player and he was very good in his first game.
It’s a shame that he didn’t score, but he made one for Yaya and he is very happy about that
“We scored four goals as a team, and Edin and Carlos already look good together in attack - they may be the best in the Premier League. But we have all to keep on working hard and building on what we do in training.”
Summer arrival Kolarov, renowned for spectacular goals with Lazio in Serie A, is still chasing his first for City and watched a little enviously as centre-half Kolo Toure snatched his first of the season.
He smiled: “I am patient ... I am happy for the strikers to score our goals! But I’d like to help out like Kolo did. It’s good for the squad if defenders can score as well. I’ll keep trying! I need just one, and then ...”
