Carlos Tevez and his Argentina compadres look like they'll have to win the Copa America the hard way after the hosts were held 1-1 by Bolivia in their opening game.

Argentina are favourites to win the final in Buenos Aires on 24 July and take the title off old rivals Brazil, but they blew their chance to head Group A against unfancied opponents.

Lionel Messi put him through.

Substitute Sergio Aguero, one of many strikers linked with City this summer, scored Argentina’s equaliser after Edivaldo Rojas backheeled the Bolivians ahead at the start of the second half.

Rojas said: “I was extremely happy to score, but more important was the team performance. This was the bright spot, because playing Argentina on their home soil is always difficult.” Messi admitted: “It’s not what we expected.”

Colombia head the group thanks to the only goal of the game against Costa Rica from Adrian Ramos, whose goals have fired Hertha Berlin back into the Bundesliga next season.

Pablo Zabaleta was an unused substitute for Argentina, who now need to make sure they beat the Colombians in their next group game on Wednesday night in Santa Fe.

Roque Santa Cruz’s Paraguay fought out a goalless stalemate with Felipe Caicedo’s Ecuador in their first group game.
