There was FA Cup heartbreak for Wayne Bridge’s West Ham as they were beaten 2-1 at Stoke. Despite beating the Potters 3-0 in the league only last week, West Ham couldn’t repeat the feat and as a result missed out on a Wembley semi-final against Bolton.
A weekend of FA Cup sixth round ties meant neither Sunderland’s Nedum Onuoha nor Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz were in action having seen their sides exit the competition earlier in the year.
Over in Spain, Emmanuel Adebayor’s Real Madrid continued their good form with a 2-0 win over Hercules – though the Togolese striker couldn’t add his own name to the score-sheet. That’s eight unbeaten now for Jose Mourinho’s men.
Free-scoring Felipe Caicedo also failed to find the net this weekend as his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Mallorca in a result that leaves Levante six points clear of the relegation zone.
North of the border, Vladimir Weiss made his comeback from injury by playing the last 15 minutes of Rangers’ 2-1 win over Kilmarnock.
To Championship action: Ben Mee played a full 90 minutes for Leicester City as his side travelled to Glanford Park to face Abdi Ibrahim’s Scunthorpe United. The Foxes won 3-0 and Ibrahim wasn’t given the opportunity to influence the result as he remained on the bench throughout.
Elsewhere, Craig Bellamy pitted his wits against Kieran Trippier, as Cardiff City squandered yet another chance to move into the automatic promotion places by drawing 2-2 with Barnsley.
A goalless draw against Ipswich Town saw David Gonzalez’s Leeds United also miss out on the chance to move into the Championship’s top two, but the Columbian keeper again played no part in the fixture.
Andrew Tutte again played 90 minutes for Yeovil Town in their 1-1 draw with Walsall and Javan Vidal has ended his loan spell with League Two leaders Chesterfield, who were surprisingly beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra.
