The 45-year-old guided his side to 6th place in his first season to 5th the season after that before winning successive Bundesliga titles in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
Euro pedigree:
Dortmund failed to get out of the group stage in last season’s competition, finishing bottom of their group. You have to rewind eight years before that to the 2003-4 season to their previous campaign where they exited in the third qualifying round, going out to Club Brugge on penalties.
The club has one Champions League title to its name, winning the competition in 1997 after a 3-1 victory over then defending champions Juventus.
Star man:
Named Bundesliga player of the year in May 2011, Robert Lewandowski found the back of the net 29 times for the German outfit last season.
The Poland international has a widely acclaimed first touch, is good in the air and can score with both feet. The prolific striker scored a hat-trick in the final game of last season during a 5-2 win over Bayern Munich.
Stadium:
The Signal Iduna Park is the biggest stadium in Germany and the 6th biggest in Europe.
It was built when Dortmund was picked as a host city for the 1974 FIFA World Cup and has undergone several renovations throughout the years to increase the size of the stadium, including an expansion of the stadium for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It can hold 80, 708 people.
