Dutch defender Karim Rekik has signed a new long-term deal at City.

Karim made two first-team appearances in last season’s Capital One Cup.

Now the ambitious youngster has targeted becoming a regular first-team player for City.

“It was a very easy decision to make, City is a great club with a great future for me” said Rekik almost before the ink dried on his new contract.

“I can develop as a player and a person at this club and that’s why I decided to stay.

“I feel at home, it feels like family inside at City, everybody is nice and they all speak to me so it was very easy for me to settle in.

“It definitely gives you a boost in confidence to be given a contract considering that we won the league last year.”

“That was a great experience for me and I really hope to be a big player for City one day.”

Rekik is fondly remembered at Fratton Park for his performances on loan at Portsmouth last season and the player hinted he may head out on a temporary basis again to aid his development as a player.

“My time at Portsmouth was really nice, I was there for a month, played eight games and it was a great experience for me so it’s definitely an option,” he enthused.

“I think going out on loan would be a great option to help me develop and I think that is the plan that City have got for me.”

Just a few weeks ago, Ruud Gullit took to Twitter and said that he couldn’t be happy for players like Rekik and that the youngster should be playing in the Eredivisie rather than attempting to make it at City but Karim is confident that he has made the right choice.

“Of course people say that City just buy players but it’s about yourself – if you’re good enough to play - you play,” he stated.

“People might say ‘why do you go there’ but I believe in my qualities and it’s my choice – it’s up to me to prove that you can make it as a young player at City.”

A Dutch youth international, Karim is one of the brightest prospects in the youth ranks and joined the first-team on the pre-season tour of Austria in the summer, working alongside Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez.

“If I train against those players it’s great for me, it’s fantastic to play against these great players and it can only help me learn,” he said.

“I’ve been out for three months with a back injury but I feel 100% and I’m happy to be back and playing.

“I’m delighted to be staying at City.”
