The Spanish play-maker has looked in peak form again in recent weeks and he is desperate to help the Blues start firing on all cylinders again.
“I’m feeling great again,” said Silva during a recent vist to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. “Before the injury I was feeling good; I was playing well but then sustained the injury which kept me out for three weeks, but now I can hopefully keep going in the right direction.
“There is a gap we need to close and six points is a good lead for United, but last year they were in front by quite a lot of points and we won the league anyway with far fewer games than we have left now. It can be done. The players have the hunger to win it again so we’ll go for it, I can promise you.
“If we do close the gap and overtake United, it would be right up there with all the other big competitions that I’ve won. It would be a great achievement to retain our title. I’ve been lucky in that I’ve won a lot of medals but I’d still like to win more
“As for our form, I think we have played good games and bad games so far this season – what we need to achieve is consistency, but each game is different.”
Silva admits the 2-0 win at Newcastle was one of many pleasant memories from the title-winning campaign, but knows the Blues will need to be at their best to leave St James’ Park with three points.
“There are many good memories from last season,” he said. “It’s always difficult place to go and play but hopefully we will have many happy recollections of games such as this at the end of this season, too.
“You can always improve, but each game has its own circumstances and I’m sure we will improve and get back to our normal self before long.”
Silva also leapt to the defence of fellow creative midfielder Samir Nasri, who was singled out for criticism by some media pundits after
the 3-2 derby defeat.
“I don’t think Samir’s position in the wall is why we lost,” he said. “You never know - you can have one person in the wall and they hit it into the stand or you can line up five and they put it in the top corner.
“It was just one of those things, we don’t blame him and he’ll be trying his best at Newcastle to help is get back to winning ways.”
