John Guidetti turned from hero to zero in a matter of moments as he once again proved the pick of City's loan stars.

The Swedish striker sent the Feyenoord faithful into raptures by opening the scoring during his side’s meeting with RKC Waalwijk with his 18th  league goal of the season – only to be dismissed for his celebration! But he has had better news since, with his outstanding form being rewarded with his first call-up to the senior Swedish squad.

Guidetti – who had been cautioned earlier in the game – removed his shirt and was accordingly sent off for receiving a second yellow card.

His side went on to concede the lead in the 87th minute and missed out on the opportunity to move up to within two points of the summit with a 1-1 draw.

It was a less eventful weekend for City duo Abdul Razak and Gai Assulin. Having joined Brighton on Friday, the pair were spared being involved in the Seagull’s disastrous 6-1 defeat by a rampant Liverpool.

While the seaside outfit may have been dumped out of the competition, the fates were kinder to Dedryck Boyata and Wayne Bridge as both Bolton and Sunderland booked their places in the final eight of the competition – though both defenders remained on the bench throughout their respective sides’ 2-0 victories.

Portsmouth’s 10-point deduction has thrown the bottom of the Championship table into disarray with three Blues being affected.

Ryan McGivern’s Bristol City are now six points clear of the drop-zone despite their 3-0 defeat at Peterborough – the Northern Irish international playing the full 90 minutes – while Greg Cunningham’s Nottingham Forest won their first home game since November to climb out of the bottom three – without the Irishman.

That 2-0 win came at the expense of Alex Nimely’s Coventry who have lost nine consecutive games on their travels and now sit three points adrift of safety.

A goal either side of half time secured Roque Santa Cruz’s Real Betis all three points against bottom-of-the-table Zaragoza, while Vladimir Weiss’ Espanyol are now without a win in three.

The Slovakian played 83 minutes for the ten-man Spanish outfit who surrendered the lead by conceding a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Getafe.
