The in-form Bosnian striker is City’s joint-top scorer this season with four goals, including the winner at Fulham on Saturday.
After spending more than three seasons with Wolfsburg - with whom he found the net 85 times in just 142 appearances - Dzeko is hoping his track record against German opposition might earn him a starting berth as City look for their first group points.
The 26-year-old he has enjoyed previous success against Dortmund, too, and knows the stuttering start they’ve made to the 2012/13 means very little at this early stage.
“Dortmund have won the Bundesliga for the last two years and I know from experience that is very hard to do so there is no doubt they are a top team and one we’ll need to be at our best to beat,” he said.
“I remember playing against them on a number of occasions and I think I scored maybe three goals against them in perhaps seven games – I can only remember three, anyway!
“Dortmund have a made a similar start to us this season in that they have been scoring goals but conceding them as well. Having said that, they beat Monchengladbach 5-0 at the weekend so they are showing signs of coming into form.
“Like us, it is difficult when you are defending champions because everyone gives 150% against you and want to beat you perhaps more than any other team. It’s something new for us this season, too, so there are definitely similarities between the two clubs.”
Edin admits the speculation about his future is frustrating at times, but adds there is no truth in stories linking him with a move away from the Blues.
“Every time I see a newspaper - for what seems like for a year or more - there is s story saying that I am leaving City or that I want to go,” said the crowd favourite.
“I’ve never said any of that so the stories don’t come from me – I’ve always wanted to stay at City and fight for my place and my motto has always been ‘never give up’.
“I hope the City fans, who have always been fantastic towards me, have seen I can score some important goals for the team and that’s what I want to carry on doing.”
All three of the Blues’ group opponents enjoyed success at the weekend with Ajax beating FC Twente 1-0, Dortmund hitting five as mentioned and Real Madrid winning 5-1 against Deportivo.
