With the final of the newly-named Capital One Cup pencilled in for early next year, you have to go back to 1976 for the Blues’ last Wembley success in the competition – and Lescott believes it’s time to end the long wait.
With Roberto Mancini likely to ring the changes for tonight’s tie with Aston Villa, the England defender is unsure whether he will start or even be named in the squad - but even if he is rested, he is urging his team-mates to go one better than last season’s semi-final disappointment.
“I think we should go all guns blazing and try to win this trophy,” he said. “Whichever team the manager puts out will be a strong one, so I’m sure we can have a real go at it.
“I supported Villa as a kid so it’s always a great occasion when I play against them, but the manager hasn’t said how he’ll approach this game.
“It’s a quick turnaround having played Arsenal on Sunday, but we have such depth in the squad that I’m sure there’ll be changes made.
“We’d definitely like to win the Capital One Cup. We’d take anything, any trophy! When you get to the latter stages of this competition it’s up there with the best of them.”
Lescott also says there will be opportunities to shine for some players who perhaps don’t play regularly or as often as they would like tonight – and they must take their chance to impress.
“It’ll be up to whoever is picked to give the manager a headache for Fulham on Saturday,” he said. “You have to make it difficult for him to leave you out.
“We will be looking to beat Villa because we’ve been a bit stop-start this season. We know if we can hit a certain level we will be hard to beat. It’s hard for anyone to match us when we hit our rhythm.
“We know we’re not quite there yet, but it’s very early days and we’re still in with a shout and we’re still unbeaten in the League which is a positive, too.”
