Team news

City

Ilkay Gundogan (hamstring) is back training with the squad but remains doubtful for the match, while Argentinian defender Nicolas Otamendi is struggling to shake off a knock and also looks likely to sit out Sunday’s game.

Kevin De Bruyne is ruled out with ligament damage which he sustained in Thursday’s Carabao Cup win over Fulham.

Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is a long-term absentee, having sustained an Achilles tendon injury. The Chilean ‘keeper underwent scans, which confirmed a rupture in the tendon of his left foot.

Southampton

Mark Hughes stated that “everybody is fit and well” ahead of their trip to the Etihad.

The last time...

The two sides met in May on the final day of the historic 2017/18 campaign, as Gabriel Jesus struck in injury time to move City to an unprecedented 100 Premier League points.

Southampton’s last trip to the Etihad Stadium also ended in a last-gasp defeat, thanks to Raheem Sterling’s added time winner.

Pep Guardiola preview

Mark Hughes

“It’s important that you look at games that they’ve (Man City) played in recent times.

“There are always elements of any team that you can look to exploit, no matter how good they are.

“They get into winning positions very quickly which we can’t let happen.

“They are going to have a lot of possession and we need to be patient and know when to press and when we can’t press.”
