There were just four changes with David Silva, Nigel de Jong, Dedryck Boyata and James Milner all given a rest and Jerome Boateng, Manu Adebayor, Patrick Vieira and Adam Johnson being the beneficiaries.
Juventus have undoubtedly seen better times than they are currently having. The Old Lady had been a touch doddery on her feet in the opening weeks of the Serie A campaign but this, led by the veteran maestro Alessandro del Piero, was a much more assured display.
They arrived in England having won two and lost two of their opening five games and having conceded nine goals. They are firmly in the midtable. In addition they could only manage a 3-3 draw at home to Lech on Matchday One of this European campaign.
Indeed, Juve went into this contest having won only two of their previous six matches though warmed by the knowledge that last time they played City in this competition they lifted the Uefa Cup!
The Blues, meanwhile, were defending a seven-game unbeaten streak in European competition.
They looked like surrendering that record for a while in the first half. Juve took the lead in the eleventh minute when Vincenzo Iaquinta’s 35-yard effort somehow skidded under the diving Hart. The audacity of the shot seemed to take the England man by surprise.
Barry’s back header that struck the post in the 33rd minute and a follow up save by Alex Manninger from Johnson sounded a warning that the home side still had plenty to give. The Blues drew level just three minutes later.
Yaya Toure’s through ball picked out the lateral run of Johnson and having sprung the offside trap the England ace finished with ease.
The second half was dotted with long range shots, most of them just wide of the target. Del Piero hit the bar with a free kick five minutes from time and that was the closest either side came to winning a game. A draw was probably just about fair.
