Manchester City battled to a 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough on Sunday and the media have given their reaction in Monday’s papers.

While many focused on where the result leaves the race for Champions League football, the Manchester Evening News highlighted yet another standout display from Vincent Kompany.

Simon Bajkowski writes: “Another positive from the game was another assured performance from Kompany.

“The man himself kept focused and fighting though and five starts in City’s last six games this month suggests he has plenty still to give. That could save a fair bit in the transfer market this summer.”

The draw leaves City on 66 points, equal to last year’s total, and as pointed out in the Independent; locked with Liverpool.

Ally McGregor scribes: “Manchester City and Liverpool face the prospect of a winner-takes-all Champions League playoff on neutral ground at the end of the season.

“City’s draw at Middlesbrough on Sunday means that they are now level on points with the Reds, but also on goal difference.

“While Jurgen Klopp’s men would currently edge out City on goals scored, it is Pep Guardiola’s side who have the easier run-in and will be looking to make up those valuable five goals.”

We have come to expect transfer rumours every day and there’s no disappointment this morning with three major names linked.

We’ll start with two Premier League centre-backs linked with the Etihad Stadium. First, The Sun believe Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny could move to City.

Jake Lambourne speculates: “Laurent Koscielny is being chased by Ligue 1 side Marseille as well as Premier League rivals Manchester City.”

Second is a very familiar name within these pages, Virgil Van Dijk. The Dutch international has been linked with City on a number of occasions and the Daily Star believe City face competition from Arsenal.

Paul Hetherington says: “It is Arsene Wenger versus Pep Guardiola in the battle of the bosses for one of the most-wanted players in the country.”

The third now and the Daily Express believe City are taking a look at Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas. They say: “The Etihad club have reportedly made an initial low offer for the Costa Rica international in an attempt to take advantage of his situation.”

That’s all for today! We’ll be back tomorrow with more on mancity.com!
