Benjamin Mendy made a significant step in his recovery process with a 45 minute cameo in Manchester City EDS’ 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Following the example of Ilkay Gundogan, who played for Simon Davies’ side on his return from injury at the start of the season, Mendy put in a solid display at full-back and showcased the attacking talents for which he is famed for with several bursts down the left flank.

It’s been seven months since he was forced off in only his fifth game against Crystal Palace and the 23-year-old was keen to enjoy the experience of being involved in competitive action again.

“It’s a good feeling to touch the ball in a real game,” he said afterwards. “Against United is a good game for my first game back after my injury.

“We are football players so we know we can have a lot of injuries. I’ve had one before (a long injury), but now it’s OK. I was out for a long time, so it was difficult, but with my family and friends, with a team like this, everything was OK.

“For my first game, my body felt good and my knee. I enjoyed it.”
