Benjamin Mendy trained alongside his City teammates on Wednesday as he stepped up his recovery from the knee injury which kept him out for much of last season.

Having endured an injury-plagued two years, the 25-year-old was, unsurprisingly, in good spirits as he joined in a squad session for the first time in 2019/20.

A metatarsal problem, followed by successive knee injuries, restricted Mendy to just 15 appearances in our Fourmidables campaign and he missed our tour of Asia in order to focus on regaining his fitness.

This latest milestone in his recovery process suggests he is edging closer to a return to match action, though last week Pep Guardiola said it was important the Frenchman trained regularly over a number of weeks before he is selected to play.

It therefore remains to be seen whether Mendy will be fit enough for this weekend’s trip to Bournemouth, but we’ll have a squad update when the boss speaks to the media on Friday afternoon.
