City were faultless from the penalty spot to beat Liverpool at Wembley and claim a sixth Community Shield success.
Gabriel Jesus scored the decisive spot kick to secure a 5-4 victory after the season opener ended level at 1-1 in normal time.
Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jesus all found the back of the net after Raheem Sterling‘s early goal was cancelled out by Joel Matip in the 76th minute at the national stadium.
Sterling‘s neat volley on 12 minutes, his sixth goal in four appearances at Wembley, came after Leroy Sane was forced off through injury.
Kevin De Bruyne proved a thorn in Liverpool’s side throughout the first half and Pep Guardiola‘s side might have been disappointed not to extend their lead before the interval, despite Mo Salah hitting the post for the Anfield outfit.
Sterling then hit the woodwork after the break before Liverpool cemented their foothold on the game, with Matip heading in an equaliser on 76 minutes.
And Kyle Walker denied Liverpool a late winner with an extraordinary clearance off the line at the death from a Salah header.
It meant penalties would decide the outcome of City’s first competitive run out of the season, with Claudio Bravo denying Gini Wijnaldum to hand City the advantage.
