England Women have lifted the Cyprus Cup for the third time, having narrowly defeated Canada by a solitary goal in Larnaca.

In their third consecutive final in the competition - and their fourth in total - a second-half Lianne Sanderson strike earned the victory for the Three Lionesses.

Jill Scott completed 68 minutes for Mark Sampson’s side in a tightly fought contest, while Karen Bardsley and Demi Stokes were named on the bench.

The success provides England with the perfect tonic ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

A game of few chances, it took until the 67th minute until the deadlock was broken, as Sanderson applied the perfect finish with a curling shot to some fine attacking play.

Though the Canadians did little to threaten an equaliser, England ‘keeper Siobhan Chamberlain was forced into a stunning stop late on, which secured the victory for her side.

England play one more time before the World Cup - a friendly against Canada at the Academy Stadium.

Also in Cyprus Cup action today were Scotland, who completed their tournament with a 3-1 win over Holland. Defender Jennifer Beattie completed the full 90 minutes for Anna Signeul’s side.

Meanwhile, Sarah Wiltshire’s Wales secured a fifth-place finish in the Istria Cup with a penalty shoot-out win over Croatia following a 1-1 draw in normal time.
