Manchester City Women had five players in the starting line-up of the final World Cup warm-up match against Canada.

The Blues’ contingent couldn’t prevent a 1-0 loss for the Three Lionesses, however with World Cup hosts Canada scoring the only goal of the game through Sophie Schmidt on 23 minutes.

Skipper Steph Houghton returned to international duty for the first time since March having recovered from injury while Lucy Bronze played her first game for seven months for the national team.

Karen Bardsley, Toni Duggan and Jill Scott made up the remainder of the City quintet.

More than 23,000 watched the game in Hamilton and it was a useful exercise for Mark Hampson’s side with England’s opening game against France just ten days away.

Bardsley made a number of important saves and Scott came close to levelling the scores in a tight game against the Canadians but a useful work-out, nonetheless.
