With just three games of their league season remaining, Nick Cushing’s side are bidding to pile the pressure on Chelsea by beating the reigning champions.
It’s already been a good week for City following Sunday’s 1-0 win over Sunderland and Tuesday’s news of an unprecedented septet of players being called up to Mark Sampson’s England squad.
Unbeaten in 12 games (W10 D2), MCWFC’s form since the World Cup has been exceptional but Liverpool are sure to have revenge on their minds and will provide a stern test of title credentials.
The Merseysiders last visited City Football Academy at the end of August where they were on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat in the Continental Cup group stages.
On that day, the Blues turned in an authoritative performance and barely gave the visitors a sniff of goal, as skipper Steph Houghton remembers.
She told us: “It’s a massive game against Liverpool - we performed really well against them in the last game and hopefully, we can do so again.
“We love playing at the Academy stadium - we’ve now got three big games at home and we’d encourage the fans to come and support us because it makes a difference when you’ve got all of those City supporters behind you, pushing you on all the way to the final whistle.
“Hopefully, we can do a job and keep our run going.”
As for Cushing, he found time to heap praise on Sunday’s hero Izzy Christiansen and shared his delight that the midfielder has been called up to the England squad for the first time.
He told us: “Individually, there have been some great performances recently but I’ve been impressed with the team as a collective as well. Developing this football club is a major strategy.
“Izzy has been an exceptional player this season and the improvement she has made - and the fact she’s received a senior England call-up - shows that.
“We talked maybe a month ago and said that if she can add 10 or 12 goals a season to her game, she’d be a top attacking midfielder and she’s scoring frequently now so I’m really pleased for her.
“This is a big game because it’s our game in hand and it could potentially take us to within two points of Chelsea.
“It’s another must-win game, but then they’re all must-wins because we want to play well in every game so the fans can enjoy watching us. We’ll try and prepare well and perform well on the day.”
Following Chelsea’s win 2-1 against Notts County at the weekend, it’s imperative that MCWFC do all they can to keep the title race alive with just weeks remaining of the 2015 campaign.
Thursday night’s game against Liverpool Ladies kicks off at 7pm at the Academy Stadium.
