Man City Women's Georgia Stanway has won the Nissan Goal of the Season award.

The Club’s Rising Star for 2015, who netted a hat-trick in the recent victory over Sunderland, broke the deadlock on the opening day of the 2016 season with a powerful long-range effort.

The strike won the public vote, beating off competition from the likes of Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Yaya Toure and Toni Duggan.

Speaking exclusively to CityTV through Facebook Live, she smiled: “I’m over the moon. It’s a massive achievement.

“Thanks to all of the fans around the world for voting. It’s an honour to receive it.”

When asked to describe her goal, she laughed: “I don’t know what I was thinking to be honest. If I’d have missed, I’d have probably been shouted at for having a shot!

“It just came to me and I had lots of time and I thought I’d have a go. It just happened to go in!

“I’ve watched it a few times but it’s just one I’ll remember.”

Manager Nick Cushing was also present to share his thoughts, heaping praise on his starlet.

He recalled: “It was the first game of the season. Georgia started as a sub but she came on pretty early as we lost Izzy Christiansen to injury.

“The goal doesn’t really surprise me because we see it in training quite a lot.

“Georgia is quite a risky type of player - she’s takes shots and she’s got an unbelievable strike.

“It’s a great finish and she’s scored a few since as well.”

This success marks another occasion a woman has won the award, after Toni Duggan had done so previously.

Stanway expressed her delight at following in her idol’s footsteps.

She continued: “Growing up, Toni was always the player I wanted to be. For her to pick it up last year and me to do so this year is a massive achievement.”
