Man City Women captain Steph Houghton believes trust in the gameplan will see the Blues progress to the Champions League quarter-finals.

with a 1-0 advantage from the home tie.

While some expect the Blues to approach the game with the intention of defending their lead, Houghton insists that is never an option.

“We’re in a really positive frame of mind,” she told ManCity.com. “We know we have a little bit more to give, and there’s no way we will play anything other than our normal game.

“We have done that for three years now – playing the way we believe in – and it has been successful. Everyone is excited and looking forward to the game.

“Brondby have some good players and they like to move the ball. They are not scared to play through the thirds and they create chances. Defensively, in the first leg they were solid, although we could have capitalised on a few moments.

“For us, it’s all about concentrating on ourselves and making sure we put the performance in, keeping up the high tempo we’ve created throughout the season.

“We know it will be tough and as always, we will respect our opponents but it’s a game we feel we can win to progress to the quarter-finals.”

Asked how far she feels City can go in Europe, Houghton added: “I think this team can go as far as it wants to.

“The Champions League is another level from the domestic league and there are still a lot of quality teams left in the competition.

“Our first job is to get through of course, and by the time the quarter-finals come around, we will be in a new season.

“There is a lot of hard work to be done from now until then but we will make sure we are fully prepared. We just need to make sure we continue to improve.”
