Three Man City Women players featured as England were eliminated from the Women's European Championships at the semi-final stage.

Mark Sampson’s side were knocked out after losing 3-0 against hosts the Netherlands in Enschede.

Demi Stokes, Steph Houghton and Lucy Bronze were named in the starting XI for the clash at FC Twente’s stadium.

It was a tight start to the game before the Netherlands broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute through Vivianne Miedema’s header.

The Lionesses responded well and created a flurry of chances to equalise just minutes later.

First, Bronze went on a strong run before pulling back for Fran Kirby, who fired over.

Jade Moore then had a header cleared off the line before Houghton floated a free kick just over the crossbar.

It was more of the same in the second half with both teams holding onto the ball well in the early stages.

The Netherlands established a two-goal lead in the 62nd minute when Danielle van de Donk capitalised on an error to prod the ball past Siobhan Chamberlain.

Ellen White came close to reducing the deficit five minutes later but saw her chipped effort drift narrowly past the post.

Bronze then had a penalty shout turned down by referee Stephanie Frappart as the Lionesses looked for a way back into the game.

The tournament’s top goalscorer Jodie Taylor had a chance late on but fired straight at Sari van Veenendaal and then Toni Duggan had an effort cleared off the line in the final few minutes.

Two minutes of added time were indicated at the end of the second half and the hosts sealed the win with the last kick of the game when Lieke Martens’ shot went in off Millie Bright.
