Nick Cushing is confident that his team won’t become complacent in the new year and believes that Manchester City’s current winning record will drive the players to further success.

The Blues have had an incredible season so far, and rounded off the year by making it to the semi-finals of the Women’s Super League Continental Cup after sealing a 2-0 win over Bristol City.

As his side prepare to break until early 2018, the manager is pleased with the achievements so far.

“The players are really enjoying it at the moment,” Cushing explained to ManCity.com. “The players are also really enjoying the environment and the culture within the group – it’s a real positive.

“I think the personalities are really driving the team on but we have to make sure complacency doesn’t breed through the team.

“With the personalities, the people and the players I don’t see that happening.

“I think for the players to go away and have a mini break until January and a rest after having so many games in the Euros it gives us the opportunity to go away with something to be proud of and to work on top of.

“I think sometimes failures can give you the motivation but success motivates us here - it’s important to have a good start but it’s also so important to finish.”

Cushing also reflected on his side’s performance against Bristol City in the Continental Cup.

“Obviously I’m really pleased that we won the game and we are through to the semi-finals but in the first half I thought our build up was good but we just didn’t have a real cutting edge in the final third and we didn’t really create any clear cut chances,” the City boss added.

“Against a team who are going to play 11 behind the ball and catch on the counter attack, nil-nil always gives them the enthusiasm to continue to try and get that one chance to score.

“I was really pleased with the second half as we created more and used the space a lot better – I thought we were comfortable in the end.”

Manchester City return to league action on Sunday 7 January away at Reading, kick-off at 4pm.
